7-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climbing

Trip Overview

On Mount Kilimanjaro, the Machame route is regarded as one of the busiest and most stunning routes. The Machame route begins with a brief drive from Moshi to Machame Gate or from Arusha to the Machame gate, and is located closer to Mount Kilimanjaro from the south. The route offers views of Mount Meru and Shira Ridge as well as access to the Shira Plateau through the Montana forest. The 6-day climb up Mount Kilimanjaro is highly advised and frequently used because it gives you plenty of time to acclimatise.

Your transfer specialist will meet you at the Kilimanjaro Airport promptly upon arrival, extend a warm welcome, and then drive you to the Moshi or Arusha hotel of your choice. Your mountain guide will meet you that evening to give you a hike briefing, check your trekking supplies, and make sure you have everything you need to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Distance: 7 kilometres
Hiking Time: 4 hours

After breakfast in the morning, you will be driven to Londorossi Gate, which is about a 3-hour drive from your hotel. After completing all entry requirements and travelling the final 15 km on a rough road, you will arrive at your starting location at the edge of the Montana forest. Before beginning the trail through the rainforest, you will get your lunch. Contrary to the days that will follow, today’s walk is only about 3 hours long, giving you plenty of time to take in the lush surroundings that will radically change as you climb. Even white and black colobus monkeys could be seen resting in the branches above you.

Distance: 7 kilometres
Hiking Time: 5 hours

The vegetation gets progressively sparser as you progress along the winding path through the rainforest until you reach a moorland that is covered in Lobelia and Erica plants. In about 4 hours, after ascending through undulating hills, you will reach Shira 1 Camp. From your camp, you will be able to see Kibo’s snow-capped summit as you look over the Shira Plateau. The day will end with a filling dinner and a final look at the starry sky.

Distance:9 kilometres
Hiking Time:4 hours

You will pass through Shira Ridge, which has rocky terrain, short grasses, and shrubs, after finishing your delicious breakfast. You will enjoy breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley and Mount Meru as you hike because the trail is much flatter than it was the day before. The moor landscape is still covered in stunning and distinctive Giant Lobelias. You can reach Shira 2 Camp by hiking on the former lava flow’s surface; here, you can get a hot meal and spend the night.

Distance:10 kilometres
Hiking Time:7 hours

After breakfast, you’ll start the ascent to Lava Tower through a terrain covered in boulders. You’ll see Kibo peak in the distance, which will motivate you to keep going uphill. After having lunch and taking some time to relax as you approach Lava Tower, which is located at an elevation of 4,640 metres above sea level, you will continue descending to Barranco Camp. This method of trekking high but sleeping low enables your body to acclimatise to the various altitudes and provides you with a solid understanding of how your body responds to altitude changes. Senecio kilimanjari and smaller Lobelia deckenii plants soon surround you as the landscape changes once more along the way.

Distance: 10 kilometres
Hiking Time: 7 hours

After breakfast, you’ll start climbing the renowned Barranco wall, which is likely the steepest part of the entire route. It’s an amazing climb. Although there are some technical climbing sections of the Barranco Wall, other sections will require you to use your hands for a better grip and to pull yourself up. Throughout your ascent of the Barranco Wall, your guide will be nearby to assist you. You will begin walking along the mountain ridge and through the Karanga Valley once you have manoeuvred yourself around the Kissing Rock. After 4 hours, you will finally cross the last water point and reach Karanga Camp.

You’ll get up at midnight and finish putting on your summit gear. In order to get you ready for the summit, you will be given some hot tea or coffee and cookies. You will ascend toward Stella Point in a north-westerly direction from the starting point, taking about 5 hours to get there via steep scree. You can take a break at Stella Point before continuing your journey’s high point, Uhuru Peak, a further hour’s climb along the crater rim. Standing on the Roof of Africa, you’ll be treated to an incredible view. You will leave the gleaming glaciers and snowy peak behind after taking as many photos as you like and descend to Barafu Camp. You will have some time to recover after returning to Barafu Camp before continuing your descent to Mweka Camp (3,080 Meters), which will take you about 4 hours.

After finishing your breakfast and a traditional ceremony by your mountain teams, your final descent to mweka gate will begin. A leisurely 3 hours walk will take you back more through the rainforest, where the endemic flower Impatiens Kilimanjari grows. You will arrive Mweka Gate where your transferring driver will be waiting for you. The driver will take you back to the arranged Hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

After your morning breakfast, you will be transferred on time to Kilimanjaro Airport or you can extend your trip to Tanzania by adding Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday
